WHICH ONE IS YOU?
A young woman comes over to her mother and tells her about her life and how difficult things are for her. She does not know how to resist and succeed. She is tired of fighting and struggling. When she solves a problem, immediately another problem arises following it. Her mother takes her to the kitchen. She fills up the pots with water. She puts some carrots in one of them. She puts some eggs in one of them. And, she puts coffee beans in the last pot. Without saying a word, she sits down and waits for the pots to boil. About 20 minutes later, she turns off the oven. She takes the carrots out and puts them in a bowl. She takes the eggs out and puts them in another bowl. Then, she pours the coffee into a cup. Turning to her daughter, she asks, “Tell me, what you see?”
Her daughter replies, “Carrot, egg and coffee.” The mother asks her to get near to the bowls and feel the carrots. She does what she says and says that they have become softer. After that, the mother asks her to take an egg and crack it. Peeling its shell, she touches the boiled egg. In the end, the mother wants her to sip the coffee. The smiles while she tastes its rich flavor. The daughter having great pleasure in the coffee asks, “Why do we do all these?”
The mother says that these foods have suffered from the same trouble, boiling water, and each of them reacts to it differently. The carrot is strong and hard. But when it is exposed to boiling water, it gets softer and weakens. The egg is fragile in the beginning. But when it stays in the boiling water, it becomes harder. Its thin outer shell protects the liquid in it. However, ground coffee beans are unique. After they enter the boiling water, they change it.
The mother turns to her daughter and asks, “Which one is you?”
“When a hardship knocks at your door, how do you react to it? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?” Think about this: Which one am I? Is the carrot looking strong me, and do I fade, get softer and lose my power with pain and trouble?
Is the egg having a fragile heart but changing in hard conditions me? I have a flowing spirit, but do I change and get harder after a death, separation, financial problem or any other hardship? Although my appearance is the same, is there a hardened spirit and hardened heart inside of me?
Or am I like a coffee bean? A Coffee bean changes hot water, the environment causing the pain. When water is heated, it gives taste and smell. If you are like a coffee bean, when things go bad, you change your surroundings with your positive reactions. In time, when everything looks darker and you feel as if it does not work in your every trial, how do you affect yourself and your surroundings? How do you cope with hardships?
Then, which one is you… a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
Some people create the future; most people expect the future to create them.
And, this is a subject which is worth thinking about, in my opinion.
